Intern – GIS Specialist
Description: McDuffie County is searching for a candidate to completed a 200-hour paid internship this summer to assist in the completion of a GIS-based map of manholes, water valves, and water and sewer lines throughout the Thomson, Dearing and McDuffie County communities.
Specific duties include, but are not related to:
- Current system analysis to determine the amount, quality and comprehensiveness of current data
- Field data collection and input to complete any all missing information
- Exporting/creating maps based on completed information as requested
- Ensure data is coordinated and corrected with web GIS provider
- Work closely with GIS contractor to ensure functionality, usability and efficiency of system.
Successful fulfillment of this role will require skills in the following areas:
- Efficient, thorough and accurate collection and interpretation of data both in field and office settings
- Understanding of the general layout and operation of a municipal water and sewer system
- Ability to recognize needs and identify solutions related to an existing GIS system, and subsequently work within the system to enter and manipulate data.
In addition, a strong interest in local government operation and related services is preferred.
Minimum qualifications include: Pursuit of a degree in planning, business administration, public administration, engineering, or related field; and a valid driver’s license. The schedule for this position will be flexible based on selected applicant’s availability. The internship must be completed between May 1, 2023 and Sept. 1, 2023.
