Fire Safety Education
Public Fire and Life Safety Education
Thomson-McDuffie Fire & EMS is committed to informing and educating the public in fire and life safety. We believe the best response to accidents and injury is not in a big fire truck or ambulance but in prevention through education and information sharing.
All of our Public Fire and Life Safety educators are state and nationally certified to deliver these life safety classes in a professional manner.
Fire Safety House
Our Fire Safety House is an interactive experience for children 5-10 years of age to learn safe practices in the home. They learn about the dangers associated with electrical outlets, space heaters, fire places, playing around areas where cooking is taking place plus much more. Scalding accidents are addressed and, when age appropriate, children are taught the correct way to fill a bathtub or safely check the temperature of the water before entering the tub.
Exit Drills in the Home (EDITH) is a big part of what is taught utilizing the Fire Safety House. The importance of having a properly maintained (change your clock – change your battery) smoke detector on each floor of your home is reinforced along with the importance routine fire drills. Some of the topics covered are have a designated meeting place, how to alert 911 and the information they will need, and of great importance is GET OUT STAY OUT.
Children can actually learn the skills needed to safely exit a smoke filled house by staying low under the smoke and feeling doors before opening them. They learn these skills by receiving instructions and practicing in simulated non-toxic smoke conditions.
Our department will make this resource available to schools, daycares, and other groups responsible for the care and education of children in the targeted age group. Available either at the station or we can bring it to you.
Friendly Firefighter
Our instructor begins this presentation in his or her station uniform and progressively transforms into a firefighter ready to enter the hostile environment of a house on fire. At each step the instructor explains the purpose of the various components of the protective gear the firefighter needs to protect them from the heat and smoke present in all fire situations. Once the Firefighter has completed the transformation he or she interacts with the audience to promote familiarity and comfort. The focus of this training is to help the children not be afraid of the firefighter and try to hide from them. At the end of this presentation participants are encouraged to don their own child size facsimile of the same gear the firefighter just demonstrated.
