City of Thomson - Historic District
In order to protect the historical integrity of the downtown district and the community's gateways, the City of Thomson created a Historic Preservation District in 2007. The City of Thomson's Historic Preservation District is regulated by the City of Thomson's Historic Preservation Commission, which is a seven-member board appointed by the Thomson City Council.
Excluding painting projects, when undertaking a material change of appearance to a particular property inside this district, the owner should apply for Certificate of Appropriateness at the Planning Commission office located in the Thomson-McDuffie Government Services Complex on Railroad Street. Certificates of Appropriateness must be approved prior to receiving a building permit to residential and commercial properties in the Historic Preservation District. There is no additional cost to submit the Certificate of Occupancy. Smaller standard types of modifications will be reviewed and approved by City and HPC staff and returned to the planning office promptly. Larger, more complicated projects may require review and approval at a public hearing held by the Historic Preservation Commission before a building permit is issued.
