Motor Vehicle
Types of payment accepted for motor vehicles – cash, money orders, bank certified funds, checks with preprinted McDuffie County address, credit or debit cards. The use of debit or credit cards will be charged a 2.5 % fee. (We do not accept American Express.)
You may renew your car tags over the phone using a credit/debit card (fee applies). Please have your tag numbers ready when you call. You may also renew online here and follow the prompts.
When coming in to renew your tag, please bring your renewal notices in or have your Georgia driver's license available. If you are picking up someone else's tags, then you will need a copy of their license and their renewal notice. Please note that motor vehicle information is private.
Motor vehicles must have insurance in force before you can purchase your tag. If tagging vehicles that are newly purchased or being put back into service, you must show a 30-day binder or have your insurance company put the insurance information into the Georgia Insurance Data Base before you can tag your vehicle. You may have your insurance company fax this information to us at (706)595-2055.
Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine or Navy Reserves and National Guard must show current letter from your Commanding Officer in order to renew your special tag yearly.
Amateur Radio Operators must show current FCC/LIC in order to renew or obtain the special tag.
Firefighters and EMTs must show certification letter to receive or renew special tag.
Payment for insurance lapse fines must be cash, money order, certified bank check or debit/credit card.
If you need to cancel your insurance for whatever reason, you must first cancel your vehicle registration to avoid paying uninsured motor vehicle fines. You will need to bring your registration card into the office so we can cancel your registration.
If you have a change of address, please contact the office and make a change with us so you will receive your tag renewal reminder and your property tax bill.

If you cancel insurance on a vehicle for any reason, please visit https://eservices.drives.ga.gov/ and cancel your registration if you CANNOT come into the office. You MUST remember to contact us to un-cancel the registration once insurance is placed back on the vehicle.
